The Catahoula leopard dog became the official symbol of Louisiana in 1979.

The Louisiana Catahoula Leopard is a very muscular dog of medium to large size. A unique feature of this breed is the distinctly visible webbing on the feet – which gives them the ability to work in swampy areas, as well as provides additional advantages for swimming.
Character
The Catahoula Leopard Dog is not recommended for inexperienced or novice breeders. She is quite “selfish” and does not treat other dogs or pets well. It is also not recommended to keep this dog in those houses where there are small children. The Louisiana Catahoula Leopard is excellent at protecting its family and its territory and is very aggressive towards strangers. But in relation to her master, she is very gentle, playful and demonstrates her feelings in every possible way.
Wool and care
The Catahoula leopard dog is dressed in a one-layer coat. The coat is short, smooth and rather dense. This dog requires minimal grooming. It is enough to clean it with a stiff brush from time to time and bathe it if necessary. It is important to regularly check your dog’s ears and feet and remove dirt and debris stuck in the fingers. The Louisiana Catahoula Leopard has no particular health problems, although white dogs may have unilateral or bilateral deafness and / or blindness in 80% of cases. There may be some problems with dysplasia, pupil abnormalities and narrowed vision.
Training
The Catahoula Leopard Dog is very self-confident, acts decisively, and tends to dominate. She needs a strong dominant and active owner. It is important to train your dog to obey and obey from an early age. Training should be conducted with firmness, fairness and consistency.
Activity
Dogs of this challenging breed are very energetic and therefore need an increased amount of exercise and training. It is not recommended to keep the Catahoula leopard dog in a city apartment, it needs the opportunity to hunt or do its usual work. These dogs especially stand out in agility. If the Louisiana Catahoula Leopard gets bored or depressed, then her behavior can become destructive.
