Caucasian Shepherd Dog: Dog Breed Description

As the name implies, this breed of dog was bred in the Caucasus and was intended to guard villages and settlements. During the Soviet era, Caucasian Shepherd Dogs were used to guard government agencies and industrial enterprises. Gradually, the Caucasian Shepherd Dogs have spread throughout the world, including the United States, where they have acquired a reputation for being completely trustworthy dogs.

Characteristic

An extremely muscular, strong, and athletic breed. The Caucasian Shepherd Dog is immediately recognizable by its very characteristic head shape and overall appearance. Most often they are called bear-like. These dogs have a somewhat elongated body, which makes them seem somewhat disproportionate, but this is a misleading impression. Males are more massive and heavier than females, however, this does not affect the working qualities of the dog in any way.

Character

The Caucasian Shepherd Dog is very affectionate towards his family members, demonstrating his affection to them in every possible way. Dogs of this breed actively defend their territory and their pets and are extremely suspicious of strangers and other dogs. It is a balanced, stable and very perceptive breed. If something seems dangerous to this dog, you will immediately hear the characteristic warning growl and barking. The Caucasian Shepherd is ready to defend this or that which belongs to her literally at the speed of light, and nothing can stop her in this endeavor.

Wool and care

The Caucasian Shepherd Dog is dressed in a luxurious two-layer fur coat, which perfectly protects it from any, even the most adverse weather conditions. The outer layer is a tough, long guard coat. The undercoat is soft, dense and very pleasant to the touch. According to the length, the coat of the Caucasian Shepherd Dog is divided into three types: long, medium and short. In order to prevent tangling and the formation of tangles, the Caucasian Shepherd Dog is often recommended to be cleaned and combed well. In order not to damage the protective properties of the dog’s coat, bathing is permissible only if necessary, using a shampoo of moderate severity. To date, no characteristic diseases for this breed are known.

Training

The Caucasian Shepherd Dog is a stubborn and rather late maturing dog. It is imperative to socialize her from a very early age. Rough or arbitrary methods are useless and training must be done with the firmness of justice, patience, and reward.

Activity

A dog of this breed is not recommended for keeping in a city apartment. They can only show their best side in rural areas, where they will have enough space for constant walks and work that needs to be done.
