Cynologists began work on a new breed of dog to help people fight rats in 1820 in Great Britain, crossing the Manchester Terrier and the Smooth Fox Terrier. In the future, the idea of the British was picked up by the Americans pouring the blood of beagles and whippets into the breed. From the beginning Rat Terrier, aka Ratting Terrier, received a red color, a developed hunting instinct and a strong physique; and from the second – blue and brindle color, speed and agility. The name of the new breed was given personally by the President of the United States Theodore Roosevelt, who was a great fan of these dogs.
Characteristic
The Rat Terrier is stubborn and self-willed, he is distrustful of strangers, but only for the first minutes, then he gets used to them. Despite its small size, the Ratting Terrier is brave and fearless. This dog is a great companion for single people. This breed is unlikely to be suitable for an ordinary family, since the Rat Terrier needs constant attention from the owner and suffers from a tendency to vagrancy, which usually causes great concern for the owners.
Character
A brave, energetic, lively and alert Rat Terrier is an excellent watchman. This is a companion dog, but it must be trained properly as it is a companion dog. a frightened Ratting Terrier may start biting. If the Pied Piper Terrier was socialized at an early age, he will find a common language with all pets, even the smallest ones.
Wool and care
The Rat Terrier has a very short coat that fits snugly to the body. It should be stiff to the touch and glossy in appearance. It is not difficult to take care of this breed, however, in the cold, the rat-catcher terrier should be dressed in warm sweaters or jackets, having an extremely short coat, it gets very cold. Dead hair is periodically removed from the dog’s coat with a rubber or hard bristle brush. Since the Ratting Terrier has sensitive skin, it should be bathed no more than twice a year, otherwise the beneficial protective oils will be washed off the coat.
Training
An overly active and stubborn Rat Terrier is difficult to learn canine science. He quickly loses interest in learning, so classes should be varied and consistent. Early socialization is recommended but not required.
Activity
A small yard for walking and playing is enough for a Rat terrier to practice a wave. Despite the fact that this dog loves to frolic in freedom, it is best to keep it on a leash or in a fenced yard. It is imperative to teach the rat-catcher terrier not to pull the leash, if this succeeds, then he will become an excellent companion for jogging or long walks. This breed is prone to laziness and obesity, so the Rat Terrier should exercise for at least 40 minutes a day.
